Paolo Nicolai e Daniele Lupo sono nuovamente Campioni d'Europa! La coppia azzurra, guidata da Matteo Varnier ha vinto a Bienne in Svizzera il titolo continentale battendo in finale i russi Semenov-Krasilnikov per 2-1 (21-15 13-21 15-12), bissando il successo ottenuto nel 2014 a Cagliari, dimostrando una volta di più di essere una formazione forte ed affidabile a livello tecnico, ma anche nervoso.
Non traggano in inganno i parziali di una gara giocata soprattutto sul piano mentale. Gli azzurri hanno condotto bene il primo set, poi nel secondo si sono disuniti, subendo molto le lunghe leve dell'altissimo Semenov (210 cm di altezza).
Il tie-break si è iniziato con l'Italia avanti prima 5-2, poi 10-6, ma la Russia non ha mai ceduto si è sempre riportata sotto sino all'allungo decisivo italiano propiziato da un muro di Nicolai. Sul 14-11 Lupo ha sbagliato il servizio, ma nell'azione successiva è rimasto lucido e preciso ed un suo gran colpo ha propiziato la vittoria, che sa di trionfo.
Un'altra impresa la coppia italiana l'aveva compiuta in semifinale eliminando con una eccezionale rimonta gli ex-campioni del mondo olandesi Brauwer-Meuuwsen, battuti 2-1 (12-21 21-16 15-10), dopo essersi trovata in svantaggio 21-12 13-10, prima di iniziare a giocare un beach bellissimo e vincente.
Una vittoria importante, un risultato significativo che allarga il palmares della coppia azzurra più titolata, soprattutto la conferma che il lavoro fatto con Matteo Varnier in proiezione olimpica sembra proprio quello giusto.

Le medaglie d’argento di Rio, Nicolai-Lupo, dopo aver esordito ieri vincendo 2-0 (21-19 21-19) contro i tedeschi Dollinger A.-Erdmann, questa mattina hanno perduto con gli spagnoli Herrera-Gavira 2-0 (21-19 21-17). Nel pomeriggio i ragazzi hanno iniziato il tabellone ad eliminazione diretta battendo 2-0 (21-19 23-21) la coppia belga Koelkelkoren-Van Walle. Domani mattina alle 8.00 affronteranno negli ottavi di finale i lettoni Smedins-Somoilovs. Sconfitte anche dalle russe Birlova-Motrich 2-0 (21-17 21-17) Menegatti e Perry hanno concluso il loro torneo al 25mo posto.

The Hague, The Netherlands, June 18, 2017 – After losing a three-set gold medal match two weeks ago on “home sand” in Moscow, Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Nikita Liamin did not duplicate their fate in the Russian capital here Sunday by out-lasting
Spaniards Adrian Gavira/Pablo Herrera to win the men’s title at the US$150,000 Dela Beach Open.
With a 2-0 (23-21, 22-20) win in 43 minutes over the sixth-seeded Gavira and Herrera, the seventh-seeded Krasilnikov and Liamin validated their No. 1-ranking on the 2017 FIVB World Tour points list as the Russians secured their second gold medal this season and third podium placement in six events this season on the international Beach Volleyball circuit.
Two weeks ago, in Moscow, Krasilnikov and Liamin forced a third-set with Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena before losing 2-1 (21-17, 22-24, 18-16) in a 52-minute finale in the Russia capital. With the Krasilnikov/Liamin partnership beginning this season, the Russian pair captured the gold medal on Kish Island in Iran in February.
“We are thrilled with this win against a very good Spanish team,” said the 31-year Liamin, who placed fifth in the Rio 2016 Olympics Games with Dmitri Barsouk after being eliminated in the Copacabana quarter-finals by eventual silver medal winners Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai of Italy. “Our season has been like a roller-coaster with three “lower” finishes until reaching the finals in Moscow.”
Prior to Moscow, Krasilnikov and Liamin placed ninth in mid-April in Xiamen China, and 17th in mid-May in Rio de Janeiro. Prior to winning on Kish Island, the Russians placed ninth in the SWATCH Major Series stop in the United States on Fort Lauderdale Beach Park in Florida. With a 20-7 match mark this season, one of Krasilnikov and Liamin’s setbacks was a two-set pool play decision to Gavira and Herrera in Rio.
As for the world rankings based solely on points accumulated from events so far in 2017, Krasilnikov and Liamin have compiled 2,260 points with Lupo and Nicolai second with 1,920 points for five participations together this season.
To gain a spot in their third FIVB World Tour gold medal match this season, Krasilnikov and Liamin scored a 2-0 (21-18, 21-18) semi-final victory Saturday in 40 minutes over 20th-seeded Nico Beeler and Marco Krattiger of Switzerland. Gavira and Herrera advanced to their seventh FIVB gold medal match by defeating the seventh-seeded Lupo and Nicolai 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) in a 38-minute semi-final match.
In the bronze medal match, Lupo and Nicolai garner their 17 FIVB World Tour medal by posting a 2-0 (21-18, 21-15) win in 35 minutes over Beeler and Krattiger, who were competing in their first-ever international “final four”. The Italians split $5,000 for third-place with Beeler and Krattiger sharing $4,000.
Being played at the Sportcampus Zuiderpark, a newly-constructed multifunctional sports and education center, the Dela Beach Open was the first-ever FIVB World Tour event to stage competition on both indoor and outdoor courts at the same time. In addition, international Beach Volleyball competition was being held in conjunction with FIVB World League contests where The Netherlands was hosting the Czech Republic, Korea and the Slovak Republic this weekend at the 3,000-seat venue which is also the new training center for the Dutch federation's Beach Volleyball program.
Following the Dela Beach Open, the international circuit takes a week off before resuming play with SWATCH Major Series stops in Croatia (Porec, June 27-July 2) and Switzerland (Gstaad, July 4-9). Highlighting the 2017 international calendar for men and women Beach Volleyball players will be the $1-million FIVB World Championships July 28 through August 6 in Vienna and the $800,000 SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals August 23-27 in Hamburg, Germany.

The Hague, The Netherlands, June 18, 2017 - Maria Antonelli and Carolina Salgado became only the second women’s team in the history of the FIVB World Tour to win a gold medal after advancing through two rounds of qualification to gain a spot in the “money” rounds of an international Beach Volleyball event as the newly-formed Brazilian pair topped the podium here Sunday afternoon at the US$150,000 Dela Beach Open.
With their 2-0 (21-17, 21-11) gold medal win in 39 minutes over 17th-seeded Joana Heidrich/Anouk Verge-Depre of Switzerland, the 15th-seeded Antonelli and Carolina finished the Dela Open with a 9-0 match mark starting with two country quota wins Tuesday, a qualifying victory Wednesday, two “modified” pool play triumphs Thursday, an elimination success Friday, and quarter- and semi-final conquests Saturday.
The first team to win a FIVB World Tour gold medal after starting an event in the country quota round were Jen Kessy and April Ross of the United States in 2007 at an international stop in Norway. However, the Americans dropped two of three pool play matches in Stavanger before winning their final six matches in the Norwegian stop.
In securing their first gold medal in only their second FIVB World Tour event together, Antonelli and Carolina shared the $10,000 first-place prize while Heidrich and Verge-Depre split $8,000. Individually, Antonelli captured her 12th FIVB gold medal with a fourth different partner in 122 World Tour starts.
Following the match, Antonelli said here team had "good energy together, that is the reason we won all our matches here in The Hague." Carolina agreed and offered that "we help each other a lot. It doesn't matter if we win or if we lose, we have a good chemistry for sure. We are positive people, we always think good things will happen. And I enjoy playing with her a lot."
The top podium placement was Carolina’s third in 139 FIVB World Tour events. Her previous two gold medal finishes in 2008 and 2013 were with her sister Maria Clara. In all total, the Salgado family has claimed 21 FIVB World Tour gold medals with 17 by brother Pedro (Solberg) and one for mother Isabel.
Verge-Depre said "we are sad about the final. But we can look back at a really good week. And I think this is what we have to take with us to the next tournaments and try to perform as we did yesterday and the days before."
To reach the Dela Beach Open gold medal match, Heidrich and Verge-Depre defeated fourth-seeded Agatha Bednarczuk and Eduarda "Duda" Lisboa of Brazil 2-1 (24-26, 21-17, 18-16) in a 62-minute semi-final match while Antonelli and Carolina were a 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) winner over 10th-seeded Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan of Canada in 39 minutes.
In the Dela Beach Open women’s bronze medal match, Agatha and Duda posted a 2-1 (16-21, 21013, 15-11) win in 47 minutes over Humana-Paredes and Pavan. The Brazilians split $5,000 for their third-place finish with Humana-Paredes and Pavan sharing $4,000.
