Roma & Beach Volley Grand Slam 2013/ ORO winners Talita-Lima vs Kessy-Ross, quinte le azzurre Greta Cicolari & Marta Menegatti
Ben 3700 spettatori al Foro Italico ad applaudire al vittoria brasiliana di Talita-Lima vs le statunitensi Ross-Kessy che guarda caso nei quarti di finale avevano eliminate le italiane Greta Cicolari e Marta Menegatti.
Giusto sottolineare che Talita e Lima hanno guadagnato l’oro i tre set ( 21-17, 21-19, 15-12, collezionando il terzo successo stagionale ( in sequenza Shanghai e L’Aia) e che le yankee a Londra avevano guadagnato la medaglia d’argento.

<<Una vittoria e due sconfitte. E’ questo il bilancio dell’esordio delle coppie azzurre femminili al Grand Slam di Roma in corso di svolgimento al Foro Italico. Nessun problema per Cicolari-Menegatti, che si sono agevolmente imposte sulle greche Arvaniti-Karagkouni per 2 a 0 (21-12, 21-17). Con lo stesso punteggio Benazzi-Orsi Toth sono state superate dalle più quotate tedesche Holtwick-Semmler (21-15, 21-11), testa di serie n.2 del tabellone. KO anche Gioria-Giombini, che in una partita molto tirata hanno ceduto il passo alle tedesche Köhler-Schumacher per 2 a 0 (21-19, 21-18).
Nel pomeriggio sono previste le seconde gare del torneo femminile e l’esordio delle coppie maschili. Di seguito il programma completo:

Grand Slam World Tour: Lupo-Nicolai conquistano il girone e volano agli ottavi, per Cicolari-Menegatti doppio successo e quarti di finale
<< Nel femminile accedono ai quarti di finale Greta Cicolari e Marta Menegatti. Le azzurre guidate da Lissandro hanno travolto in mattinata nei 16imi di finale le tedesche Köhler-Schumache con un perentorio 2 a 0 (21-11, 21-9). Si sono poi ripetute nel pomeriggio battendo le australiane Bawden-Clancy per 2 a 1, conquistando l’accesso ai quarti di finale che le vedrà opposte alle americane Ross-Kessy.

QUARTA NEWS ( di Sergio Sottovia, flash by rassegna stampa) / QUINTO POSTO PER CICOLARI & MENEGATTI ( SCONFITTE NEI QUARTI IN DUE SET DALLE STATUNITENSI KESSY – ROSS)
Questione di tabellone e di ‘combinazioni’ di incontri. Così nei quarti di finale Marta & greta hanno dovuto fare i conti con le statunitensi Kessy – Ross ( argento a Londra 2012) che hanno capitalizzato al meglio anche la ‘giornata no’ delle azzurre.
Infatti Marta & Greta non erano certo le ottime beachers azzurre che avevano debuttato con estrema facilità contro le greche Arvaniti-Karagkouni sulle quali si sono imposte per 2-0 (21-12, 21-17) in 36’ minuti di gioco.
Certo nel secondo match Marta e Greta si sono fatte sorprendere dalla coppia tedesca Ludwig - Walkenhorst che con un doppio 21-17 hanno regolato le nostre ragazze in 41’.
Poi però c’era stata la pronta risposta delle due azzurre che si sono rifatte contro l’altra coppia germanica Borger – Büthe costretta ad alzare bandiera bianca per 2-0 (21-16, 21-17) anche questa in 41’ di gioco.
Così Marta & Greta si erano meritate l’accesso ai 16esimi di finale dove ad attendere c’era la coppia tedesca Köhler-Schumacher peraltro battuta dalla coppia azzurra in soli 33’ e in soli due set per 2-0 ( (21-11, 21-9).
Giusti per meritarsi l’accesso agli ottavi di finale dove, Greta & Marta hanno entusiasmato lo stadio Pietrangeli del Foro Italico vincendo in rimonta.
Infatti dopo aver ceduto il primo set a Bawden – Clancy per 16-21, in quello successivo Marta e Greta hanno ripreso in mano il pallino del gioco andando a vincere per 21-18 portando le australiane al tie break.
E qui nell’extra-time le australiane sono crollate di fronte alla maggior freschezza e lucidità di Marta e Greta che sono andate a vincere col largo 5-9.
Ma evidentemente le azzurre a questo punto avevano speso tantissimo anche dal punto di vista mentale e così nei quarti di finale contro Kessy-Ross hanno pagato pegno e perso seccamente per 2-0 ( 11-21 e 8-21) senza troppo controbattere le giocate delle statunitensi.
Conquistando peraltro un significativo “quinto posto” che visto il ranking presente al Grand Slam di Roma va considerato una conferma delle qualità tecniche e tattiche della coppia Cicolari – Menegatti, se consideriamo altresì il rallenty di inizio stagione determinato dall’infortunio alla spalla occorso alla nostra Marta.

TALITA AND LIMA MAKE IT TREBLE JOY WITH GOLD IN ROME
<< Rome, Italy, June 23, 2013 – Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima won their third gold medal of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour with victory in the gold medal match of the smart Grand Slam – Rome on Sunday.
The Brazilian pair beat USA’s Jennifer Kessy and April Ross to win 2-1 (21-17, 19-21, 15-12) and add the Rome gold to their victories in The Hague and Shanghai Grand Slams.
“I am so happy,” Talita said. “In this match we had good times and bad times and Ross and Kessy were so good tonight. I am so happy for Taiana to score the last point.”
Talita and Lima dominated the first set and carried that form into the second. However, mid-way through the second set the USA pair called a time-out and from then on they worked their way back into the match. The Brazilians took the initiative early in the tie-break though and while Kessy and Ross saved three match points, a Lima drop-shot won the match.
Next up for the Talita and Lima are the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Stare Jablonki, Poland. The players have just over a week to recover from their endeavours in The Eternal City for the tournament that begins on July 1.
“Now we have to forget about this week and then next week we will just think about the World Championships,” Talita added. “We are going to go home, that way we can fully focus on the World Championships, it is the most important tournament for us this year.”
For Kessy and Ross the silver is their third set of medals from the Rome Grand Slam. They won gold at the 2010 edition and bronze in 2012. They too have success at the World Championships in their sights and are out to match their 2009 win.
“April and I for years have known when to peak and we are on an upswing,” Kessy said. “For the whole year we’ve been getting better and better and better.
“We are sad we didn’t win that game. I have about four side-outs from the third set in my mind that I could have done a lot better, but I am really happy with how we stuck together. Not many teams can come back like that.”
BRONZE MEDAL DELIGHT FOR LILI AND SEIXAS
Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas De Freitas won their first FIVB medals together since they claimed the 2007 U21 World Championships by winning the bronze with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) victory over Germany’s Britta Buthe and Karla Borger.
They faced another pair who were aiming to win their first World Tour medals in Buthe and Borger and while they won the first set comfortably, the Germans led for most of the second until a time-out allowed the Brazilians to turn the momentum in their favour.
“This is our reward for all our work,” Lili said. “We are happy to play together and we put in a lot of preparation. I can’t explain my emotion right now. I’m really, really happy because we played at our best here.
“They are a good team and they deserved to be here, like us. But we played out best again, so I think we deserved this win.”
The Rome Grand Slam was the fourth Grand Slam of 10 on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. The competition ran from June 17 until June 23, when both the men’s and women’s finals took place.
Following the Rome Grand Slam, the world’s leading players take a week’s break before the start of the ninth FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Stare Jablonki from July 1-7. After the World Championships are completed the World Tour resumes the following week at the Gstaad Grand Slam in the Swiss Alps.>>
