E’ ripartita dal prestigioso circuito Daytona International Speedway in Florida, la nuova stagione agonistica di Alessandro Balzan, sempre portacolori della Scuderia Corsa e sempre alla guida della sua Ferrari 488 GT3 stavolta in trio con Cooper MacNeil, Gunnar Jeannette.
Tutto nel segnato della sostanziale continuità , con poche variazioni sul tema, oltre al new look con la Ferrari in versione …white color.
Ma come è andata e come poteva andare questa prima corsa stagionale americana running for IMSA?
Diciamo che non è andata secondo le aspettative, come si evince anche dalla due Anteprima News ufficiali by Racesferrari e by Scuderia Corsa, ma il ‘soltanto’ decimo posto’ finale’ ha anche un’altra faccia al di là della classifica finale.
Insomma ha evidenziato una potenzialità inespressa sul traguardo ma che , per come si sono risolti i problemi in corsa, fa comunque ben sperare per il proseguo stagionale.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (January 22, 2017) – Heading to the famed “World Center of Racing,” Daytona International Speedway, Scuderia Corsa will arrive with a record 11 cars set to compete in successive events. Beginning with the season-opening rounds of the Ferrari Challenge USA, a series-high nine Scuderia Corsa entries will take to the track, while the team will also see two cars take the green flag during the prestigious 24 Hours at Daytona.
Considered the biggest race in North American sportscar racing, the 24 Hours at Daytona event weekend is four-day festival unlike any other. As the highest attended event on the calendar, a large, international crowd will take part in a schedule filled with racing entertainment, beginning with a double-header for Ferrari Challenge, followed by the headlining 24-hour event that will see over 50 top-tier racing cars competing.
Kicking off the weekend in the Ferrari Challenge USA, Scuderia Corsa will look to begin their 2018 season ready for competition. The team welcomes Cooper MacNeil, David MacNeil, Thomas Tippl, Bradley Smith, Jim Camp, Mark Fuller, Michael Fassbender, Oscar Arroyo-Paredes and Chris Carel to a new year. A product of the team’s Driver Development Program, six of the entrants are now veterans of the team’s system, gradually elevating participants from street cars to full-fledged professional racing.
For the Daytona 24, the first event of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the team will arrive with two cars in defense of their three consecutive series championships. In the full-season No. 63 Ferrari 488 GT3 entry, drivers Cooper MacNeil and Alessandro Balzan will be joined for all endurance rounds by Gunnar Jeannette, as well as team veteran and former Daytona and Le Mans winner Jeff Segal for the 24. Additionally, Scuderia Corsa will present a second-car for all endurance races, the No. 64 Ferrari 488 GT3 of Bill Sweedler, Townsend Bell, and Frankie Montecalvo, who will be joined at Daytona by Ferrari factory driver Sam Bird.
For team owner, Giacomo Mattioli, the beginning of a new season is always an exciting one.
“This weekend is a great return to action for our program,” stated Mattioli. “Our group has been involved in Ferrari Challenge competition for 20 years now, so to arrive with nine cars is a great opportunity to provide an excellent experience for our drivers and their guests. This all leads to the Daytona 24, which will give us the opportunity to contend for our fourth-straight IMSA series title. It will be our first IMSA race with everyone at WeatherTech, and we look to deliver, and of course with our No. 64 entry, we have a proven driver line up with the return of our 2015 IMSA Champions.
Official practice for the event begins this Thursday, January 18, with a double-header of race action taking place on Friday and Saturday for Ferrari Challenge. The 24 Hours at Daytona will begin on Saturday, January 27 at 2:40PM ET, ending 24 hours later. Live television coverage will be available in the U.S. via FOX on Saturday, January 27 from 2:00-5:00PM, then FOX Sports 2 from 5:00PM-10:00PM, FOX Sports 1 from 11:00PM-1:00AM, then on Sunday via FOX Sports 1 from 8:00AM-10:30AM and 1:00PM-3:00PM. 24 hour coverage will also be available via the FOX Sports Go app, as well as international coverage via IMSA.com, RadioLeMans.com and SiriusXM Radio.

Daytona, 25 gennaio 2018 – Prima fila tutta Ferrari in classe GT-Daytona (GTD) alla 24 Ore di Daytona, con la pole position che è stata ottenuta dalla 488 GT3 numero 51 del team Spirit Of Race affidata a Daniel Serra. Seconda posizione per Miguel Molina, con la vettura del team Risi Competizione. In classe GT-Le Mans (GTLM) settima posizione per la 488 GTE di Risi Competizione che è stata qualificata da Toni Vilander.
GTD. In classe GTD fin da subito Daniel Serra, al volante della Ferrari 488 GT3 del team Spirit Of Race, ha dettato il passo migliorandosi giro dopo giro fino a scendere a 1’46”049, la tornata più veloce mai percorsa all’International Speedway da una vettura di questa categoria. Insieme a Serra in gara ci saranno Paul Dalla Lana, Pedro Lamy e Mathias Lauda. In seconda posizione prenderà il via la vettura gemella del team Risi Competizione che è stata guidata in qualifica da Miguel Molina. Lo spagnolo, anche lui capace di migliorarsi passaggio dopo passaggio, è stato capace di fermare i cronometri a 1’46”502. Miguel, pilota ufficiale di Maranello, dividerà la vettura con Matt Griffin e i messicani Martin Fuentes, Santiago Creel e Ricardo Perez De Lara. In quinta posizione partirà la prima delle due Ferrari del team Scuderia Corsa. Alessandro Balzan ha ottenuto 1’47”055 e in gara si alternerà sulla 488 GT3 con Gunnar Jeannette, Cooper MacNeil e Jeff Segal. Qualifica meno brillante per l’altra vettura di Scuderia Corsa, la numero 64 di Sam Bird, Townsend Bell, Bill Sweedler e Frankie Montecalvo. Bird ha ottenuto 1’47”839, buono per il 14° posto.
GTLM. In classe GT-Le Mans la Ferrari 488 GTE del team Risi Competizione è stata protagonista di una sessione di qualifica in salita. Al volante si è messo Toni Vilander che ha iniziato ottenendo tempi relativamente alti, riuscendo però a migliorare nel finale fino a scendere a 1’43”601 che è stato sufficiente per la settima posizione, a poco più di otto decimi dal tempo della pole position ottenuta dalla Chevrolet di Jan Magnussen in 1’42”779. La pole position assoluta è andata alla Cadillac di Renger Van Der Zande in 1’36”083.
Programma. La gara prenderà il via sabato alle 14.40 locali (20.40 CET) ma prima sono previste altre sessioni di prove libere, inclusa quella in notturna per dare modo a tutti i piloti di prendere confidenza con le condizioni che si ritroveranno a dover gestire in gara. La conclusione domenica, alle 14.40.

DAYTONA BEACH, FL. (January 28, 2017) – Beginning the 2018 racing season with tremendous momentum, Scuderia Corsa will walk away from this weekend at Daytona with a successful combination of victories and resilient drives in their Ferrari Challenge and IMSA programs respectively.
Kicking off the weekend in the Ferrari Challenge USA, the team’s driver development program was off to an immediate start following Friday’s Race One victory of Cooper MacNeil in the Trofeo Pirelli category, matched by Michael Fassbender taking his first-ever motorsport victory with a first place in Coppa Shell. Saturday’s Race Two would provide a similar result, with Mark Fuller taking top honors in Coppa Shell, followed by Thomas Tippl taking his first-ever victory in the Coppa Shell AM. Chris Carel would take dual runner-up finishes in Coppa Shell as well, while David MacNeil, Bradley Smith, Jim Camp, and Oscar Arroyo-Paredes would enjoy the high banks of Daytona.
Beginning the top-tier IMSA season at the most notorious event in North America, the 24 Hours of Daytona, the team’s No. 63 and No. 64 Ferrari 488 GT3 entries would both enjoy top-ten finishes, earned by virtue of preparedness and resilience.
Driving the No. 64 Ferrari 488 GT3, Bill Sweedler, Townsend Bell, Frankie Montecalvo and Sam Bird would enjoy a relatively mistake-free run en route to a fifth-place finish, gaining valuable championship points toward their quest for the North American Endurance Cup.
The No. 63 WeatherTech Ferrari 488 GT3, meanwhile, would overcome early adversity to gain nearly 10 positions throughout their run, with Cooper MacNeil, Gunnar Jeannette, Alessandro Balzan and Jeff Segal taking 10th position.
The 2018 race would also mark the first time that the team has taken top-10 finishes for both entries in their “Daytona 24” entries.
For Bill Sweedler, a top-five provided a solid foundation for their endurance season.
“The 2018 Daytona 24 was uniquely different from any other 24 I have competed in – only 20 minutes of yellow flag running in what seemed like a full day of sprint racing! But Scuderia Corsa and its entire crew, engineers, spotters, and team management handled it flawlessly. My teammates were amazing and helped me keep positive while coping with the Flu during the entire day! Now onto Sebring!”
Enjoying his start to the endurance season, Frankie Montecalvo enjoyed his team debut.
“This Daytona 24 hour was one of the hardest endurance races I’ve ever had the honor of competing in. With so little yellows it felt like an all out sprint race from start to finish. It was a great way to start the season finishing in the top 5. I want to thank the team and my co drivers for their great performance.”
In the No. 63, Cooper MacNeil would perform well to open up his IMSA season.
“[There was] one hiccup the whole race that cost us,” MacNeil said. “We didn’t have the car to win, but we had a top five car. The good news is that we got some good points. Hats off to the team for working hard on getting the problem solved quickly and efficiently, and getting us back out there with minimal laps down. We never gave up. We kept clawing back. We made it back from 18th to finish 10th. And, with as few yellows as we had, I think that was pretty good. I’m looking forward to Sebring.”
For Alessandro Balzan, the professionalism he’s come to expect would continue through the weekend.
“After facing the fixing the electrical issue the race was very smooth, we never had any other problems. The team executed very well. To finish a 24 hour is always a goal and I want to thank the entire team for their continued hard work.”
For team owner, Giacomo Mattioli, a strong performance by the overall program is something to stand behind.
“To bring 11 entries across two series this weekend is a testament to the overall organization,” stated Mattioli. “This weekend represented a complete team effort by Scuderia Corsa. During the 24 Hours, the crew did a great job in reacting and fixing the early race issue. The cars were very competitive throughout the race, and our drivers made disciplined and intelligent decisions. I am proud of the team with continuing our Never Give Up mentality. We are looking forward to the next endurance race at the 12 Hours of Sebring.”
The next event for the Ferrari Challenge USA will take place from March 9-11 at the prestigious Circuit of the Americas, while IMSA will continue one week later at the famed 12 Hours of Sebring, running from March 14-17.

Daytona, 28 gennaio 2018 – Un potenziale notevole inespresso, parti di gara a livello dei migliori ma un risultato finale insoddisfacente. Così può essere riassunta in estrema sintesi la 24 Ore di Daytona 2018 in chiave Ferrari.
GTLM. In classe GTLM la vettura numero 62 di Risi Competizione, affidata James Calado, Davide Rigon, Alessandro Pier Guidi e Toni Vilander, è stata protagonista della prima metà di gara. Vilander è partito senza forzare ma alla quarta ora era nel gruppo di testa, alla rincorsa delle due velocissime Ford. Nonostante diversi guai, tra cui un problema con la rete di sicurezza in abitacolo, una foratura e la sostituzione di una portiera, la 488 GTE se la giocava per il podio. All’altezza di metà gara un guaio tecnico ha fatto perdere sei giri al team che, non aiutato dalla pressoché totale assenza di neutralizzazioni, non ha più potuto recuperare e si è dovuto accontentare della quinta posizione. A riprova del potenziale della vettura resta il giro più veloce della corsa, ottenuto in 1’44”008 da James Calado nel primo terzo di gara.
GTD. In classe GTD i rammarichi sono stati anche maggiori, visto che la Ferrari poteva contare su una prima fila monopolizzata in qualifica. L’auto numero 82 di Risi Competizione aveva preso il comando della corsa grazie a un velocissimo Miguel Molina ma la gara del team di Houston è stata condizionata da un guaio al rifornimento verificatosi nella prima parte di corsa. La vettura è rientrata ai box ma un problema al bocchettone ha fatto schizzare sulla vettura del carburante che, finito su parti incandescenti, ha preso fuoco compromettendo il resto della competizione. L’auto ha terminato la corsa con Molina che si è alternato a Matt Griffin, Martin Fuentes, Santiago Creel e Ricardo Perez De Lara. Alla fine è arrivato un 17° posto. La vettura numero 63 di Scuderia Corsa è stata protagonista nelle prime fasi di gara fino a quando un guaio tecnico ha fatto perdere a Balzan-MacNeil-Jeannette-Segal nove giri che sono stati recuperati solo parzialmente. I quattro sono giunti decimi. Con i primi fino alle 8 del mattino è stato anche l’equipaggio della Ferrari 51 di Spirit Of Race, costretta al ritiro dopo un’uscita di pista di Paul Dalla Lana che ha provocato troppi danni per continuare GT3. La migliore delle Ferrari alla fine è stata la numero 64 di Scuderia Corsa, paradossalmente la vettura che aveva sofferto di più in qualifica: Sam Bird, Frankie Montecalvo, Bill Sweedler e Townsend Bell sono risaliti dal 14° al quinto posto conclusivo dimostrando una volta di più le potenzialità della vettura, un grande potenziale sfortunatamente inespresso. La vittoria assoluta è andata alla Cadillac di Joao Barbosa, Filipe Albuquerque e Christian Fittipaldi.
